Who said dictionaries aren’t works of fiction? With your child’s help, dictionaries can tell some of the most imaginative tales of all.

Cull any three words from a dictionary, and ask your younger child to weave them into an original story.

Choose another three incongruous words, such as “lemon,” “pickle,” and “mouse,” and ask your young storyteller to integrate them into a familiar tale.

Select three words, and have your child use them in a sentence that begins a story. Your child then chooses three more words from a dictionary, and challenges you to use them in the next line of the tale, and so on, until your chain story is complete.
